- What To Expect
A Pulmonary Function Test is a group of breathing tests that show how well your lungs work. It helps your healthcare team understand how much air your lungs can hold and how well you move air in and out.
What happens during the test
- This is a non-invasive breathing test that checks how well your lungs are working.
- You'll be guided through different breathing techniques by a respiratory therapist.
- Duration & Arrival
- Please go to the Third Floor of the building.
- Arrive 20 minutes early for the intake process.
- The test takes 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Wait Times
Your visit may extend up to one hour past your appointment time. While we do our best to stay on schedule, delays can sometimes happen. If this occurs, we appreciate your patience.
- Preparation & Restrictions
Before Your Appointment
- Avoid recreational drugs, alcohol, and smoking for at least 12 hours before the Test.
- Avoid heavy exercise prior to your appointment
- Have a light meal about 2 hours before.
- Avoid all caffeine for prior to your appointment (coffee, tea, soda, including decaf, chocolate, energy drinks).
- Water is allowed and encouraged.
Inhalers & Puffers
- Bring all your inhalers with you.
- If you are taking inhalers or puffers, please speak to the booking team about when to stop them prior to the test
Clothing
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
Safety & Support
- You may bring one support person, aged 16 or older, but only if you need help with translation.
- Children may not accompany patients during the test or left unattended in the waiting area.
