What is a Carotid Ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound is a quick, non-invasive imaging test focused on the two large arteries on the sides of your neck. These vital blood vessels are the primary pathways delivering oxygen-rich blood from your heart directly to your brain.
Using warm gel and a small hand-held wand, this scan checks for any narrowing in the vessels to help ensure your brain is getting the healthy blood flow it needs.
Why Do I Need a Carotid Ultrasound?
The main goal of this scan is preventative care. Our team uses it to:
- Screen for Plaque: Look for a buildup of fat, cholesterol, and calcium (known as plaque) that can stick to the inside of your artery walls.
- Assess Stroke Risk: Identify narrowed arteries early so your physician can create a plan to protect you from a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA, or "mini-stroke").
- Investigate Abnormal Sounds: Check your neck arteries if your doctor hears a "bruit" (an unusual whooshing sound) through a stethoscope during a routine exam.
- Monitor Past Procedures: Ensure that a previously placed arterial stent or a surgical site remains clear and open over time.
