- What To Expect
An exercise stress test shows how your heart works when it is beating faster, such as during
physical activity.
What happens during the test
- You will walk on a treadmill while the speed and incline gradually increase
- Electrodes will be placed on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm
- Your heart rate, blood pressure, and symptoms will be closely monitored throughout
- A small area of chest hair may be removed if needed for proper electrode placement
- Duration & Arrival
- Please arrive at Unit #100, First Floor
- Arrive 20 minutes early for check-in
- The appointment takes about an hour
- How to Prepare
- Do not exercise on the day of your test
- Avoid caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment (coffee, tea, chai energy drinks, chocolate, decaf coffee, pop)
- Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and recreational drugs for 12 hours before
- Do not take erectile dysfunction medications for 24 hours before
- Eat a light meal and drink water up to 4 hours before your appointment
- Wear comfortable clothing and running shoes (a short-sleeved shirt is best)
- Avoid lotions, oils, or perfumes on your chest (deodorant is fine)
Safety & Support
- You may bring one support person, aged 16 or older, but only if you need help with translation.
- Children may not accompany patients during the test or left unattended in the waiting area.

Yes, these are safe to take.
Can I use marijuana or nicotine products before the appointment?
Please avoid both for at least 12 hours before your exam.
